After centuries of practice, can the church Hierarchy throughout the world and Laity in the pews imagine a church where new ideas can flourish?
In 2021, Pope Francis issued a formal invitation to the church in the pews to share their thoughts and concerns. Many voices responded with their sensus fidelium (sense of the faithful).
“The entire body of the faithful, anointed as they are by the Holy One, cannot err in matters of belief. They manifest this special property by means of the whole people's supernatural discernment in matters of faith when ‘from the Bishops down to the last of the lay faithful’ they show universal agreement in matters of faith and morals.”
Will the church Hierarchy, with a very long history of dictating unquestioning obedience, be able to listen with the heart as well as with the ears as Pope Francis requested?
Pope Francis called for a synod and invited input from the laity; the first session is now complete but the battle has just begun.
